Dearest Reader
A bride in bloom is a sight most divine - but what of the bouquet she holds? What of the arch that crowns her vows or the dainty posies nestled at each table? Indeed, choosing the perfect flower is an art and a science… or in our case, a gentle balancing act between beauty and what Mother Nature happens to be offering this season.
You see, even the most romantic peony cannot flourish on command - particularly if one’s nuptials fall in February and the flower, stubborn as ever, prefers October. Thus, today’s entry is one of elegance tempered with wisdom - a guide, if you will, to selecting blooms in harmony with South Africa’s glorious seasons.
Spring (September – November)
Oh, the joy of spring! This is when the world exhales in colour. Think amaryllis, freesias, tulips, sweet peas, and peonies. Delicate, fragrant, and undeniably bridal. A season for soft palettes, wild-style bouquets, and whimsical romance.
Summer (December – February)
The season of abundance - and heat. Here, roses, dahlias, zinnias, and hydrangeas shine. One may even be bold and request a sunflower or two, should the mood call for golden joy. Do beware the midday melt, however - no bride wants drooping blooms before the kiss.
Autumn (March – May)
Understated and rich, autumn lends itself to dramatic charm. Proteas, cosmos, daisies, Peruvian lilies, and the ever-faithful gerbera hold court. Pair deep tones with textured greenery, and you’ll turn every guest into a poet.
Winter (June – August)
Ah, the elegant chill. Fear not, for snapdragons, lisianthus (those dainty, bell-shaped blooms), stocks, and baby’s breath remain loyal through winter. For texture and interest, lace leaf (those glossy, sculptural wonders) bring a modern twist. Add succulents, cone bush, or the bold beauty of king proteas for drama. Fewer blooms may be available, yes - but those that remain are striking indeed.
While one may import tulips for a July wedding, spend wisely. Local blooms not only support your growers, but they also last longer, travel better, and often smell sweeter. Let your florist guide you - and trust that seasonal can still be sensational.
In short, choose what is available, arrange it with love, and carry it with pride. For no bouquet is more perfect than one held with joy.
